Aristotle said : A Friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.

PS 169 says: Friends look after one another.

Whichever definition you choose, please BE A FRIEND.

WHAT IS PS 169?

PS 169, the Robert F. Kennedy School, is a multi-site Special Education public school in Manhattan. Emotionally disturbed children, many from economically disadvantaged homes, are here for remedial education. These are children who have been unsuccessful in previous educational environments. In many cases, the specially trained staff, the small classes and the supportive surroundings at PS 169 combine to halt the downward spiral toward lifelong underachievement. The goal is to prepare students to return to mainstream schools.

WHO ARE THE FRIENDS OF PS169?

The Friends of PS 169 is an organization of volunteers who, since the 1950's, have provided support for learning disabled children. Volunteers raise funds to enable as many children as possible to attend a specialized therapeutic summer camp, Camp Ramapo in Rhinebeck NY. There they can play happily and constructively, building new skills in a nurturing setting. The volunteers tutor students on a one-to-one basis, teaching both academic and social skills. The children are treated to a much-needed abundance of love and personal attention. The camp and tutorial programs have been successful in improving the lives of these children. The extra personal attention they receive when they participate in these programs very often helps to heal severe emotional scarring. The challenge to the Friends is that many more children at PS 169 need this kind of help. Whether you choose to contribute money toward camp tuition fees, or decide to take on a tutoring assignment, you can make a very real difference in the life of a child.
